Water Questions 2

  1. List the main reasons for water scarcity.
Very low rain fall, population growth, agriculture, pollution and global warming which causes many climate changes

  2. a)What is a drought? A prolonged period of time when there is less than average rainfall. b)What type of hardships do you think that a drought could cause if were living in a village in a poor country such as Ethiopia? People would have no water supply, it would be very hot, crops would die and people and life stock will also die. There will will be a famine and land will dry up.

  3. How does land degradation affect the supply of fresh water? It stops fresh water water going into the soil, and instead all the rain water will directly flow into rivers and lakes. Also the rain water will take away the top soil and you will have erosion

  4. a) What is El Nino ? The warming up of the SouthernEastern Tropical Pacific Ocean. b)Why does El Nino often cause drought in Australia? The clouds and rain storms that come come with warm oceans also shift towards the east. As a result rains which would normally fall over Australia start falling over the dessert in Peru. This causes forest fires and drought in the Western Pacific and flooding in South America.

  5. Observe the map showing the global effects of El Nino in 1982-83. a)What effects does El Nino have on the availability of fresh water? The regions where there is a drought the fresh water supply will run on reserves and might run out. But in the regions where there is more rain than average the aquifer will fill up, but floods will probably also happen and cause salt water intrusion. b) Name the countries and describe the problems that arose from decreased rainfall caused by El Nino ? Indonesia : many forest fires and clearance of tropical forest causing very high air pollution levels. Singapore & Malaysia : air polution due to burning of tropical forest. Philippines : lower rice harvest following drought. China : agricultural land under threat from drought in Northern regions and flooding in Southern regions. Papua New Guinea : Drought related failure of food crops, leading to famine conditions requiring food aid. Africa : reduced corn crop in Sub-Saharan region. Australia : wheat exports threatened by drought across grain growing areas and mostly in New`South Wales

Water Treatment Plant

On Thursday the 12th of November half of grade six went to a water treatment plant. The reason is because grade six is learning about water and how people go through the process on how to clean so it becomes clean enough to drink and do everything else with. The water treatment plant we went to is somewhere near to Anchol. While all the math and science teachers went to the water treatment plant the other half of sixth grade went to Bintaro Lama.
Step 1, Garbage Removal: At this stage they let the water from the river come in. First they let the water through a big filter to take out all the bulk in the water and send it to a place where the recycle the garbage to make other things such as bricks. After all the bulk is gone they send it to a smaller filter to take out most of the smaller pieces of the pollution in the water. At the plant they have to clean the filters every hour because the river is polluted really badly.
Step 2, Alum Added: At this stage they bring the water all the way to the back of the plant to put in a chemical that causes all the tiny dirt particles to come together and from floc. This chemical is added and then they stir the water causing all the dirt to come to the top and sick together. This takes long before the water is moved to the stage of cleaning water.
Step 3, Allow The Sediment To Settle: At this stage the alum has been added and now the floc is settling to the bottom so they can scoop up all the dirt from the bottom instead of skimming it from the top, this is called sedimentation. Once they have scooped the sediment from the bottom the water is sent to the very back of the plate. This stage might take a long time before they can move the water on to the next stage.
Step 4, Filtering The Water Through A Sand Filter: After the water has been cleaned some really tiny dirt particles still are in the water and this can cause very bad diseases. In this stage water is filtered through 1metre of sand and then sent to another tank. The sand that they use is very unique because all the sand grains are the same size because otherwise the rest of the tiny dirt particles can go through smaller grains of sand.
Step 5, Disinfecting To Make Potable: At this stage chemicals are added to the water to make the water clean and potable. They add many chemicals to make the water cleaner and able to send it to reservoir and the water is very clean after it has been through the whole process on making extreme dirty water to clean water.
We were done and now heading back to JIS, when Yash and I realized that the river where the water treatment plate used is the same river that is in front of our apartment building. I found it amazing and wanted to know other ways on how to clean water in other countries and how they use it.

Bintaro Lama

On Thursday the 5th of November part of grade six went to Bintaro Lama. The reason we went there was because grade six is learning about water and how people in parts of the world get it and clean. In Bintaro Lama WatSan has a project there helping the people of the kampung clean their water so it is safe to drink and use. I went to stations 2, 4 and 6. In these stations we learnt ways on how they clean water and how they use it.
Station 2: PHP hand washing for kids and adults.
This station is about people wash their hands. They have to wash there hands after they have pooed because once they have pooed, they have no toilet paper to clean butt, instead they have to use their hands. Once they are done they go to have food they touch it and it gets contaminated with the nasty germs of their poo. Here they also teach people on how to be hygienic, by putting soil on top of the poo so no flies can get to it. WatSan also taught them many other ways to keep themselves safe for harmful bacteria.
Station 4: Ceramic and PUR filtering.
At this station we learnt one on how they clean their water so it is potable. The ceramic filter is a big filter with a ceramic piece on top where they poured the water in. Once they poured the water in, they had to wait 8-10 hours on till the water was clean enough to drink and cook with. If they wanted water to have in the morning they would put the water in the ceramic filter at night and in the morning they would be able to use it. With PUR they put in the powder and wait of a while, soon when all the dirt has settled on the bottom they put it through a filter several times until it is clean.
Station 6: Air Rahmat and aquataps.
Air rahmat is a product that you have to put in special amounts of it for the amounts of water. You pout in the Air rahmat and shake it for 30sec and then put it in the sun to wait 30minutes until the water is potable or usable. The Aquataps are many used for emergency because it is a very fast method of clean water. WatSan put the Aqautaps in and wait about 5-10 minutes until the water is clean to use.
I really enjoyed myself and found it very amazing on how many ways people in Bintaro Lama have to get clean water, but the down turn is it takes a lot of effort and time for them to get the clean water they need.

Questions On Fresh Water

1. What percentage of the world's supply of water is fresh water?
2.5% of the world’s water is fresh.
2. Where is the world's supply of fresh water found?
Most of the fresh water is found in ice, but humans get it from the ground water.
3. Even though the supply of fresh water is abundant it is still a problem. Why?
The water is not evenly spread out across the world and humans do not handle it properly. Also if people us it properly not everyone can get to it.
4. Observe the map of the world average annual precipitation (opposite). a) Describe the changes in rainfall that occurs as you move from the Northern to the Southern tip of Africa.
At the Southern tip is a bit dry but when you get to the middle it rains more often, just past the middle the northern tip is just like the southern tip drier and does not rain that often. b) Describe the changes in rainfall that occurs as you move from the Western to the Eastern tip of Australia along the Tropic of Capricorn.
At the Western tip it is bone dry with hardly any rainfall but as you move closer and closer to the Eastern tip it just gets wetter and wetter.
5. Observe the map above of water availability per person. a) Which parts of the world appear to have large amount of water available per person?
Countries that are not overpopulated, they also have enough money to sustain their country and population. b) Which parts of the world appear to have a small amount of water per person?
Countries that are overpopulated and don not have enough money to give their whole population the fresh water that they need.
6. Observe the diagram of water use. a) What are the main uses of water?
Agricultural and industrial use the most water. b) Which uses have increased the most over the last century?
Agricultural has increased the most over the last century.

The Water Cycle

I chose this picture of evaporation because even if it maybe childish it shows how H2O (water) goes up into the air from the water and will soon turn into clouds. These molecules are turned in to a gas and the sun makes them float into the sky to form clouds and restart the water cycle. Evaporation is very important because if the water from rivers, oceans, pods ect... does not turn into water vapour the water cycle breaks apart and there is no more rain.

I chose this picture on condensation because as you can see there is a cup with cold water in side it. The cold cup and war moist air collide and form condensation. This is because of the water vapour in the air and when it hits something colder than it's self it turns back in to it's original form water, but it stick on the cold glass.
I chose this picture on precipitation because it shows that precipitation can be a bad thing and because it also indicates what precipitation is(rain, snow, hail etc...). The reason raining is so bad is because the clouds have to much water vapour and need to let it out. Also by this big storms come and can wipe out towns and cities. Precipitation is one of the most important because the Earth would get to hot and there would be much less water that will be able to become water vapour.

I chose this picture of infiltration because it clearly shows how the ground gets water from when after it rains. On this picture you can see that it rained and then the water sank into the ground and and the travel until it reaches a ocean or river/steam. Infiltration is very important because it gives water to plants. This ground water can also be a bad thing because if it rains on a mountain the rock might get slippy and may cause a landslide.

My Personal Narrative

Thomas Maher
Oct. 5 2009
The day I Nearly Got Killed
Coming back from school my dad was down at the pool reading his magazine. I say “hi” to him.
He responds “Hey Thomas you know what I found this morning?”
“No” I told him.
"This is what I found," holding up a bullet from the air attack last night
"Where did you find that” I asked my dad.
“Down over there by the playground” he told me.
“Awesome” I replied.
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!!!!! “Thomas get up!!!!!” everyone was shouting in my house. The LTTE has come and The Government is firing back. Still asleep I didn’t know what to do so I walk to where my mom was standing. Everything was blurry for me and things were ringing in my head.
“Quick Thomas hurry up or do you want to die by bullets flying through the windows” my mom shouted. Once I heard that I sprang into action running as fast as I could to get behind sleep through the air attack, but it was to noisy with the guns outside making a walls. I finally got there and I was extremely scared, so I tried to racket, tourist laughing and my mom shouting through the radio to the security of my dad’s office.
“Thomas get up we are going in here so we are safer” my mom told me once I was awake. We went into the bathroom and the noise of guns firing was even louder because it echoed and echoed so loud we could not stand it. By now I was fully awake and was trying to think straight and not thinking that I was going to die. We were now inside behind walls, when all of a sudden the shooting stopped for about a minute.
We looked outside to check if the air attack was over but we were wrong, an airplane had just crashed into a building 500m away form my house and The Government army thought all the airplanes were down. We could see a fire in a shopping mall and in a building right next to a hotel were an airplane crashed and then exploded. Then all of a sudden, The Government wanted the last LTTE airplane down and started firing again but this time with all they had. Now The Government sent their airplanes out but the airplanes were to fast for the LTTE airplanes. It was funny. So the Government stated firing again but this time randomly into the air hoping that they would the airplane.
I heard the phone ring and my mom picked up “hello” she said. My friends on the 9th floor were all alone with their parents out partying.
My mom told them “to stay behind walls and as far a possible away from windows”. They did as told, but they were still very frightened.
We called my dads office and said “what on earth is happening?” my mom shouted ant them.
They said “to stay behind walls and just stay calm’. We did every thing correctly but still scared of the war.
My friends called again and asked “if we could call their mom?” We called their mom just when she started driving to her apartment. The Government said no lights were allowed on so it was all dark outside and she was driving in the darkness.
My dad’s office called up and said “stay behind walls and you will be safe” we did as told and we were safe for the rest of the night. Every time I heard fire crackers I jumped out of my seat and ran for my life thinking it was an air attack. Also that day on the best newspaper in Sri Lanka said “What a Failure” in big bold letters, under the title it said 12 dead and 81 one wounded. I was laughing my head of be cause that is not a failure. My parents agree and my dad showed it to our driver and he also laughed and told his story of his family in the air attack.

The Gym

Today there was no wind and I had to go sailing. I rigged up my boat and sail, and was ready to sail after the briefing which always is about 30-1:30 minutes each time, but he says the same thing over and over again, but each time differently.

While we were waiting for the coach my sister was showing off her mandarin to the Singaporean boys sitting with me. They were amazed and then the coach came in. He was also impressed by my sister and then he started talking away about team racing. The wind died down and we had to go for physical training in the gym.

My parents were in the members lounge, they were not surprised as there was no wind forecasted for this morning. So we went for a work out. In the gym we first had to run for 10 minutes straight with no breaks. I ran for 11kmph for the first nine minutes and in the last minute I ran 13kmph. This was only the warm up for the 2 hours of the gym session. Next we stretched for 5 minutes, now we had to do all the weight lifting machines in the gym and each one, we had to do 2 times. Then we had to do 30 sit ups, and then the machines again for 2 rounds and then again 30 sit ups. Next we could do anything we wanted while someone was on hiking chair. Finally we finished with pretending to sit 90* against the wall. This was the end of physical training for the day, in the afternoon we were sure to go sailing unfortunately in light winds, but this is better than nothing.

Water Skiing

For the first time this holiday I went to the East Coast Park water ski cable park. I checked on my bike early morning and went back to the apartment and had breakfast, which was delicious. I had to do the dishes so I rushed them and sprinted of to my bicycle at the back of the car park. I undid the lock and cycled really fast up to the top of the car park. Then I remembered that my sister had the money and could not go without her to the cable ski park. She finally reached where I was standing on my bike. She was cross that I didn't wait for her by her bicycle down in the car park.

My sister and I raced each other to the underground passage and who ever won could do whatever they wanted to the other person. I won as always and I am not a mean brother so I said I would do nothing to my sister. We climbed up the stairs by the underground passage and were able to go up hill, cross the highway on a bridge, go downhill and cross the road until we were in the East Coast Park. My sister was a bit slow so I had to wait, until we could race to the ski park. My sister went ahead but she had a passage that was on the outside, and since I was on the inside I was ahead and won again. We got the wrist bands and went off to go water skiing.

Here I go, I was first in line and on my first round. My sister chose the wakeboard and she was right behind me. I now was on my second round when my sister fell off at the last turn. Too bad she had to walk back in the line that was building up every few minutes. My sister was off again by the time I was on the my sixth round, this time she made the last turn and I was on my eighth round, my hand started to hurt a bit so I went in between two marks and that meant I was finished with my go.

I stood in line, luckily it went really fast so I was up and going again in no time. This time I did 18 rounds and the instructor said I had to stop because the crowd was building up and I was doing too many rounds. Then went off again and only did 4 rounds because there were people in the way and I could not pass. I was very happy with myself and couldn’t wait to tell my family.

Fixing My Bicycle

Today went down to check up on my bike to see if I could use it to cycle on the East Coast Park with my parent and sisters. I was amazed by the condition my bike was in because the chain was all rusted up and would not move and my tyres were completely flat with almost no air in them. My mum came down to check on her if it was usable. Her bicycle was worse than mine, the tyres were even more flat, the chain, the handle bars and the pole to keep the saddle up were all rusted up. My mother said that we would need some supplies, so I sprinted up and got the W-40, a spanner, a hammer, the pump and another tool, once I got all these supplies I raced down to my mother so we could get to work.

Now the fun had just begun. We setup all the tools and got to work. We started with the tyres, I pumped and while my mother made sure that the air got in. My mum’s bikes front wheel was really flat so I had to pump a lot until the tyres were rock hard. The wheels were now done and we moved onto the rusty chain. We sprayed the whole chain with W-40 and then started getting the all the parts of the chain moving to full flexibility so the bicycle would work. It took us a long time before we got the whole chain to work properly and the bicycle would move. Last we sandpapered all the rusty parts of the bicycle. When finished the bicycle look good as new. My mother tried the bicycle around the car park and she found the bike was working really well. Now we wanted to fix my bicycle but we had just run out of W-40, so I cycled on my sister’s bike to the Esso station to get the W-40.

Upon my return we started with the chain because my mother’s hands were already dirty and we didn’t want to make other things dirty with oil. We sprayed the chain with the lube and we found out that it was a kind of gel meant for putting on chains, but keeping the chain from rusting in a long period of time. We sprayed it any way and tried making the chain flexible again. We were done fast but my mum cut her hand and I had to pump the tyres on my own. Finally 2 hours later I could cycle.

Aisa's Restaurant

After a tiring week, my family and I decided that we were going to go to the Asia's Restaurant. Around 6:00pm we went down to restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton. Now it is Asia's Restaurant, but it used to be The Airlangga Restaurant until the bomb explosion happened and they changed the name to get their business back. It took the restaurant a few months to get back to normal. Luckily I was not in my apartment when the restaurant blew up. My family and I wanted a memory of this place, since it was our last meal there, because we were going to move to another apartment in Kuningan. The buffet is amazing with foods all over Asia. From Japan it had sushi, from China Peking duck and roasted duck and with many more Chinese foods, from Thailand skewers, traditional foods from over Asia and it had all sorts of noodles and soups. My favourite food there is sushi and Peking duck.

For my starter I went directly to the sushi counter at the beginning of the buffet, knowing me I took loads of it and waited for my family until I was allowed to eat. My main meal came and I got my soup, duck and various dishes of Indonesia. Finally I was allowed to get my desert and I went straight to the chocolate fountain and to my favourite apple crumble.

When my sister went to ask for the bill, she came back confused. So I went up and after a while I found a waitress. She came back with the bill 10 minutes later. My mum checked the bill before she paid, but there were mistakes. We explained but the waitress still didn't understand, so we explained the promotions (children which are 12 and under eat for free otherwise half price, free flow of wine and we had a 25% off coupon). After 4 trials we finally received the correct bill, my mum signed it and went up, but frightened that an aftershock of the earthquake would strike on Jakarta.

The Killing By Robert Muchamore *****

The Killing is the fourth book of the C.H.E.R.U.B series. In this book James Adams and Shakel are sent on a mission to Trinity College to find out about the terrorist group Help Earth. They bugged the Head Masters office and his car. They also hacked his computer and found very useful information. When their job is done, they went back to CHERUB campus.

Before James arrived in campus, Mr Large (head of actives) organised a game. The whole dinning room is split up into four teams of five. Each team gets 30 eggs which they had to keep for the night in the battle ground until 8 in the morning. Each person was armed with paintball guns. All the teams were dropped off at different points and the battle began. James team came third with 6 eggs left.

James and Dave get sent on mission again but to Palm Hill which is just out side London. On their mission James and Dave have to find out where Leon got the money which he used to pay off all debts, buying a pub and steeling cars which he sells for 50,000 pounds. They have to investigate the murder of Will who was pushed off a roof. They bugged Leon's cabin and the house of Mike, who is a close friend of Leon and a corrupt cop, hoping that it will give them a lead in the investigations.

My favorite part is when James bugged Mike's house and changed his car for a sabotaged clone. After that night John pretended to work for a car company, looked at Mike's car and said "the car had many problems. This made Mike and Leon mad at each other because Mike bought the car from Leon and his family could have died. Mike got so angry that he went to Leon's cabin. Leon and Mike have a long violent discussion and then Leon spills out that Mike killed Will by pushing him off the roof. John hears this over the bug and called the cops.

Charaterzation In THe Killing

By Robert Muchamore

The Killing is a book by Robert Muchamore in where James is the protagonist trying to catch bad people, in a small town with and other agent Dave. I think that Robert has done an excellent job on letting us know about James.

On page 84 Robert shows how much James cares about not having any friends, even though it was his own fault. When Robert makes James say "Lauren" James shouted she stop and said "what" James shrugged. "I don't know......stay with me for a bit, watch T.V. I feel like being on my own. "I've got a party to go to on my floor and p;us it's not my fault your miserable" she said slamming the door behind her

On page 113 Robert shows how James is a protagonist by being friends with the criminal's son by when Robert wrote, "Your my balcony buddy James" Max said "its also good to have an Arsenal fan around this neighbourhood" James grinned "looks like we are an endangered species in this part of town" The two chated on and on.

On the blurb Robert shows the main proplem in this book by writing. Leon is a small-time crookwho's ridden his luck for three decades. When he starts slashing big money around the cops are desperate to know where it came from. James is sent on mission but there is only one problem the only person that could know the truth fell to his death thirteen months earlier.

Tasikmalaya Earthquake

On the 2 September 2009 an 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. It is said that there are 44 dead and many wounded. The earthquake hit in two phases first at 3:00pm and 8 minutes later the second hit but this more powerful. During lunch yesterday at JIS a big 1 meter long black snake slithers in to a hole under a tree because we think that snake moved from its place to another because it could sense the earthquake and didn't want to be killed.
In Jakarta the capital of Indonesia were all the sky scrapers were all swaying from side to side. At my house in Mega Kuniningan was moving a lot and the whole residents had to be evacuated, and on the road every was waiting to get in their house, offices and apartments. At least nobody died in Jakarta and my family was safe. On the bus when I went on the first the whole bus was shaking and every on shouting EARTHQUAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now a tsunami watch is on and people are preparing

Robert Muchamore

Robert Kilgore Muchamore (born 26 December 1972) is an English author, Robert was most known for writing the CHERUB and Henderson's Boys series. Robert Muchamore had his first book The Recruit published in April 2004. He worked as a private investigator for thirteen years, where he gained much of the insight he used to write the CHERUB series. He later left this job and began to write full time in mid-2005. Robert Muchamore started writing the CHERUB books because his nephew couldn't find any books that he liked reading. He tried to write books that he would have enjoyed reading when he was 12 or 13 but that didn't work out until he wrote The Recruit.

I love his style of writing because what ever he writes I will read it but when I read his books nobody can me out. Robert Muchamore likes to write adventures of spy's or outlaws and these books are the best.
I think you should all read one of his books.

Maximum Security By Robert Muchamore *****

This book I have read is my favorite so far from the C.H.E.R.U.B series. It is about this boy named James Adams who is a secret agent because his mother has died and his father is in jail for abusing James sister Lauren. They got sent to a children's house and then sent to C.H.E.R.U.B. this all happen in the first two books.

In this book James is sent on a mission with his sister after she past basic training for a hundred days. On this mission James, Dave and Lauren get secret names so now it's James, Lauren and Dave Rose. They get sent to Arizona Max, because Jane Oxfords son Curtis Oxford is in prison and if they bust him out they can track him down until he gets to his mother who has been stealing weapons from the army and selling them in South America. The U.S Army and F.B.I have been wanting to get Jane Oxford for more than a decade.

My favorite part was when James and Curtis did their amazing escape out of Arizona Max. First they got harmless weapons and shot every one who was on guard. After that they had to go to the car park to find a car which opened to the keys they had. James sprang to the wheel and started to drive. They got to and agents house picked up Lauren got in a different car and zoomed of in to the desert to L.A.

Typhoon Morokat

On the 8-9 of August there was the worst storm in Taiwan in 50 years with 2 and a half meters of flooding. Each day non-stop, many people have suffered from this natural disaster. Here in the picture you can see a hotel has fallen down by the major flooding. Luckily no one in the hotel got killed. The news estimated that 800-900 people have been killed in this storm. In this little town in Taiwan, Chaiya was the most affect town in Taiwan. In Chaiya the whole was right at the bottom of two mountains with their reservoir. By this town has two river on each side on the North and on the South, during the flooding these rivers over ran over and destroyed a brige connecting a highway. If you look closer to the picture can see how fast the water is running.
